Jim Schauer:  [0:24] Good morning, everyone. Welcome to this week’s episode of “Coffee with Jim & James.” James, on a very serious note, I was able to attend the AMPP NACE Central Area Conference in Kansas City last week. [0:00]

James Cross:  [0:37] I heard about it. I heard that. [0:00] Jim: [0:39] It… [0:00]

James:  [0:40] Out in the wild. [0:00] Jim: [0:41] Oh, I’m telling you, it was wonderful. And being there, getting to know a lot of our AMPP friends, my wife, Tammy Bomia and Brad Malcolm are co‑chairs of the Special Topic Committee for what’s called the Short Course. And I am still learning a lot about that industry. [0:00] [1:00] And Brad introduced me to Josh, and we had a conversation. And it was just one of those things where Jane Brown or somebody said, “You guys should be on Coffee with Jim & James to get a little, you know, education exposure about that.” [0:00] [1:16] So hence, that’s where we are today. And I will say that I learned a lot in the pre‑show today. So I’m excited to dive into our guest. But, James, how are you doing today? [0:00]

James:  [1:28] I’m well. I’m well. Happy to be here. Just met Josh in the pre‑show. It’s always cool when you get to meet someone that probably you’ll, you know, meet out in the, out in the wild world, as you described earlier. So Josh, welcome to the show. How are you, sir? [0:00]

Josh Brewer:  [1:44] I’m awesome. Hey, thanks for having me, guys. I really do appreciate this. This is awesome. [0:00]

James:  [1:49] You bet. And just… [0:00]

Josh:  [1:50] Heard a lot of good things. You guys have a lot of viewers. And it’s, it’s, it’s really cool that you guys are doing this thing. So that’s awesome. [0:00]

James:  [2:03] Yeah, that’s a different show. [0:00] [0:00] [

Josh:  [2:06] laughs] [0:00]

James:  [2:06] You’re thinking of a different show. [0:00] [0:00] [

Josh:  [2:09] laughs] [0:00]

James:  [2:01] In full disclosure, Josh said he’s way better in person. So he set the bar really low for himself. As we had to [inaudible] he said, “I don’t know if I’ll translate as well virtually.” So we’re going to, you know, audit him after this. We’ll see how it goes. [0:00]

Josh:  [2:16] So you’re just preparing everybody for my stiffness right now. Got it. [0:00]

James:  [2:19] No. He said, he only has two… [0:00] [[2:21] crosstalk] [0:00]

James:  [2:21] Josh said he only has a couple of jokes. But it works out well this way because everyone will think you’re, you know, the funniest man alive. [0:00] [0:00] ‘Jim: [2:30] Cause… [0:00]

Josh:  [2:31] If, if, if, honestly, I do. I have the funniest corrosion joke ever in the history of cathodic protection. Now, it is, you remind me because it’s the only corrosion joke that exists. But let’s not, let’s not, you know, let’s not get into that. [0:00]

James:  [2:46] I mean, we can’t not hear the joke now. [0:00] Jim: [2:49] Come on, Josh. [0:00]

James:  [2:50] Is it clean? Is it clean enough for our audience? [0:00] Jim: [2:52] Yeah. [0:00]

Josh:  [2:52] Oh no, definitely not. No. [0:00] Jim: [2:54] Oh. [laughs] [0:00] [[2:55] crosstalk] [0:00]

James:  [2:55] OK. [0:00]

Josh:  [2:55] No, no. OK, so, so I have to think about it. [0:00]

James:  [2:59] Try to think of how to make it clean, I think. [0:00]

Josh:  [3:01] Yeah, think about how to make it clean. No, no. It’s good. It’s a good joke. But, but I felt like we built it up too much. So… [0:00]

James:  [3:08] OK. [laughs] [0:00] [[3:08] crosstalk] [0:00] [0:00] …

Josh:  [3:08] maybe we should, maybe we should do some‑, ’cause now I’ve got nowhere to… [0:00]

James:  [3:11] Listen, Josh. We’re, we’re not going to… [0:00] [0:00] …

Josh:  [3:12] nowhere, OK, OK, so. [0:00]

James:  [3:12] We’re going to put it in the comments afterwards, and we’ll let everybody decide whether it was funny. [0:00]

Josh:  [3:19] OK, so we’ve got, we’ve got an anode and a cathode. They’re, they’re walking down the street. And the, the, the cathode looks down, no, sorry. The anode, the anode looks down at the cathode and says, “hey, hey, you dropped, you dropped your electrolyte there.” “Are you sure?” “Yes, I am positive.” [0:00] [0:00] [

James:  [3:39] laughs] Oh, my son… [0:00]

Josh:  [3:42] The anodes are positive, pipe’s negative. OK, so. [0:00] Jim: [3:45] Ah… [0:00]

Josh:  [3:45] I… [0:00] Jim: [3:46] I see what you did there. [0:00]

Josh:  [3:47] I find that if you explain a joke, it makes it that much better, right? [0:00] [0:00] [Jim: [3:52] laughs] [0:00]

James:  [3:52] It does. [0:00] [0:00] [

Josh:  [3:52] laughs] [0:00]

James:  [3:52] My son believes that. That, that’s right up his alley. He’s a dad joke kind of guy. [0:00]

Josh:  [3:57] Oh. [laughs] [0:00]

James:  [3:58] And that one definitely fell in that category. Well, Josh, welcome to the show. Thank you, sir. And I’m gonna bow out of this one a little bit. I’ll come back in when I have value. But I feel like this is a Jim special. [0:00] Jim: [4:10] Well, it’s, it’s kind of my world, and I’m learning more about it. And I have to tell you, living with a AMPP NACE coatings inspector, Tammy is, and she’s been that way for years. She’s always mentioned Purdue, Purdue Short Course and things like that. She’s also mentioned Morgantown and such like that. And I’ve never been there, but I I’ve heard about it. [0:00] [4:32] So, Josh, would you do us a favor? Give us a high‑level flyover about yourself but also about the Short Course and what’s coming up. [0:00]

Josh:  [4:41] Yeah, sure. I won’t talk about myself too much. That gets kind of boring. But, so I started in the corrosion industry in 1995. So that puts me at 20, 25 years or so doing this. [0:00] [4:54] Always on the consulting side, dealing with mostly integrity management and whatnot. So I have been here at Integrity Solutions for, geez, I’m just shy of 10 years now. And, and we keep on offering more and more services. Started the company with, you know, four of us. And we’re growing to just, just under 60 people now or something like that. So… [0:00] Jim: [5:21] Great. [0:00]

Josh:  [5:20] …it’s certainly been a, been a fun ride. And, yeah. OK, so the Short Course, this is the, officially it’s the Underground Corrosion Short Course. And we’re usually at Purdue University. We’ve always been affiliated with Purdue. We’re still affiliated with Purdue. We have a lot of the, the people there and the staff that help us do a lot of outreach. It’s a lot of fun. [0:00] [5:41] So the course is August 31st through September 3rd, Sept‑, September 2nd. I’m sorry. [0:00] Jim: [5:49] Coming up. [0:00]

Josh:  [5:49] Yeah. [0:00] Jim: [5:50] It’s coming up. [0:00]

Josh:  [5:50] Coming right up, couple, couple weeks here. Normally, we have this the last week in February. But with, you know, the zombie apocalypse, we ended up, it felt like we were kinda dead man walking, waiting for this thing to finally just, wait ’til the last minute before we cancel it. [0:00] [6:07] And then we had the idea, hey, let’s push it back, and maybe we can do something. So it’s certainly been a scramble. Now, the university has a lot of protocols and whatnot. And they, they’re really hesitant to work with outside entities and things like that because of all the COVID restrictions. [0:00] [6:23] So we actually moved this. We’re normally in Lafayette, Indiana. But we’ve moved to Fort Wayne, which is just, you know, about an hour and a half, two hours east of there. So Fort Wayne, Indiana, and it’s at the Grand Wayne Convention Center… [0:00] Jim: [6:37] OK. [0:00]

Josh:  [6:38] …which is a real conference center. So instead of working in and winding our way through campus and all that. We have a real convention center. So, so we’re really, really excited about that this year. [0:00] [6:50] The course starts Tuesday. And there’s a couple things that go on on that Tuesday, but it’s really informal. We have a hands‑on section where it’s just a ad hoc. People can walk in whenever they want. [0:00] [7:02] We have it open for about three hours there. And we’ll have, like, teach people how to hang a rectifier or interrupter on a rectifier, how to read a bond. We have a bunch of different anode material so they can pick them up and play with them, maybe take a UT or a pit depth measurement gauge, just a lot of things. [0:00] [7:20] And there’s, there’s really just a lot of good people in there with a lot of experience, explaining things. And a lot of really good sidebar conversations happen in there. You know, they’ll be people that are kind of afraid to ask or what’s going on or how do you do that? [0:00] [7:34] So we’ll, we’ll have just a lot of people that are, that are familiar with this, years of experience, kind of stay in the back, looking, pretend to look like they don’t know what’s going on. [0:00] [7:42] And then they’ll start talking. And then, you know, then they learn more. And then they get excited. And then they finally grab onto the stuff, put their hands on it, play with it, see how the instruments work. It’s a lot of fun. It really is. [0:00] [7:53] After that, we have a roundtable discussion, where you can ask any corrosion or cathodic protection‑related question that you, you, I guess you could ask anything. But usually, they only asked about cathodic protection ’cause they’re a bunch of geeky engineers, I suppose. [0:00] [[8:08] laughter] [0:00] Jim: : [8:11] Wait a minute. Let me jump in your, while you’re having a drink. So… [0:00]

Josh:  [8:14] So now I just offended all the engineers. That’s bad. That’s bad. [0:00] Jim: [8:17] No, no, no. I, after leaving the AMPP NACE event, the Central Area Conference last week, I said to a few people, I’m like, “Man, my brain hurts.” I said, “I’ve been around brainiacs for three days.” And again, very smart people, and the conversations are, a lot of the conversations I engage with in the industry, maybe OQ compliance. But also on the operation… [0:00]

Josh:  [8:39] Yeah. [0:00] [0:00] …Jim: [8:39] side ’cause of my history, you know, grids, meter sets, service lines, you know, digging, all those things. And then last week was like, you know, you’re anode joke. I mean, people are, you know, going, well, this anode, bah, blah, blah. And I’m like, I’m sitting there going wow, OK. [0:00]

Josh:  [8:55] Yeah. [0:00] Jim: [8:55] This is, this is, yeah. Yeah. [0:00] [[8:58] crosstalk] [0:00]

Josh:  [8:58] Yeah, yeah, yeah, exactly. So, so we get into the course, OK, after the roundtable and everything like that. The next day there’s a great big vendor show, a lot of people, a lot of networking, a lot of fun, a lot of energy. It’s just a really, really exciting place to go. [0:00] [9:12] And then we get into a structured class. And I took some notes because I forget. We offer so many to track. So we start with this practical applications course that, that, really, the intent of this was to have people that corrosion or cathodic protection is not their first job. [0:00] [9:33] Maybe they’re at accounting or they do something else that’s not exactly this. And they want to learn all the jargon and know and understand what goes on. So we got a day and a half of that. So it’s really, really kind of cool. [0:00] [9:46] Then we have your, your basic intermediate advanced. And those are designed for your technicians that CP is their main duty, their main job. And it helps prepare them, you know, to pass CP1 and pass CP2. [0:00] [9:59] The advanced class is really a lot more design heavy. So we get in there and we actually show these people how to design ground beds and, and talk about soil resistivity, a lot of good things. [0:00] [10:11] We have a coating section. We have special topics and integrity management. So these are just hot topics in the industry, right? Special topics is, deals with everything. [0:00] [10:20] And then pipeline integrity deals with specifically just stuff with the integrity management. Last but not least, we have the internal section, which your buddy Jane Brown teaches. She’s wonderful with that, get a lot of people in there. That’s probably the newest class. [0:00] [10:37] Now, this year, it’s hard getting a lot of speakers last minute and whatnot. So that class is only going to happen on Wednesday. We’re not going to do that for the half day on Thursday. [0:00] Jim: [10:47] Yeah, I got an inside tip that, again, a shout‑out to Brad and Tammy for, with that special topics track. George Ragula is going to be talking about cure‑in‑place liners. They talk about MMT being leaders in material verification. Chris, from Seal for Life is going to be there, understanding more about linear anodes. [0:00] [11:11] So I’ve been getting some some hot‑off‑the‑press communication… [0:00]

Josh:  [11:17] Yeah. [0:00] [0:00] …Jim: [11:17] in regards to this. So some great things coming up for that. [0:00]

Josh:  [11:20] Yep. It’s certainly really exciting. Then after that, we have, you know, that [inaudible] of two vendor shows. So that that day after the first class is, there’s a great big vendor show. Again, a lot of fun. And then the second day, we wrap up. There’s a test at the end. [0:00] [11:33] So, you know, one thing that we kind of took the heart here is a lot of these people that work, especially, like, the technicians, sometimes their compensation and movement in the company is related to how many certifications they get. [0:00] Jim: : [11:47] Yep. [0:00]

Josh:  [11:47] So, so we felt really compelled, you know, to, to try and have this, with so many of them being canceled. This way, they can come in. They can get that certification and, and hopefully move on in their career. [0:00] [11:57] Which is, which is really good, and really exciting for us because, you know, all of us really, really, it’s all volunteer. You know, we don’t get paid for this. So there’s just kind of a passion to teach and share what you learn, right? That’s kind of what we do as, as human beings, right, just pass it on, you know? Yeah. [0:00]

James:  [12:13] That’s awesome. Josh, in the, I mean, to build on that a little bit, who, in your opinion, who needs to be there? Who, you know, are, we’re talking to our audience, who would benefit from the Short Course? And, you know, what’s kind of your charge there to get them there? [0:00]

Josh:  [12:33] Yeah. So really, this deals with everybody. If, if you’re in this industry, you can come here. We’ve created something for you. If you’re a guy that just deals with atmosphere, there’s that coating section. The internal and external people, a lot of things you talked about earlier, I have no idea what you said with that first person that’s speaking that. [0:00] [12:50] I don’t know anything about internal. I know that there’s an inside to the pipe. OK, that’s where my knowledge stops with internal corrosion. That’s why we bring people like Jane in. So, so maybe one year, you want to learn about something like that. [0:00] [13:02] But then we have that, that, your, your technicians to come in, to your structure, to learn about everything. And then, of course, management, accounting, whatever. Anybody that, they they can come in to take that fundamentals, that, that, that practical applications. That, that’s just, it’s good. [0:00] [13:17] And if you’re, if you’re in high‑level management and want to make decisions on who my next vendor is or who my next supplier is, there’s that vendor show. [0:00]

James:  [13:25] Yeah, and then there’s… [0:00]

Josh:  [13:27] We just have everybody, you know? [0:00]

James:  [13:26] Yeah. [0:00]

Josh:  [13:26] We usually have right around 50 or more. And, and it’s just a really good time. Good chance to meet people, learn about new products in the industry, and, and always make new contacts, you know, which is just, just what this is all about. [0:00]

James:  [13:39] That’s cool. I was, I was just thinking, Jimmy. We need to get with Josh about, you know, maybe offering our Soft Skills, you know at a Short Course in the future, something like that. [0:00] Jim: [13:50] Be a great idea. [0:00]

James:  : [13:50] It’s a, it’s a great… [0:00] Jim: [13:51] Yeah. [0:00]

James:  [13:51] …skill. We’re doing, we have a full‑day course on Soft Skills. So Josh, that’s awesome. Thank you for joining… [0:00]

Josh:  [13:58] You know, not to, not to give a shameless plug to you guys or anything like that, but… [laughs] [0:00]

James:  [14:02] No, we’re open, we’re open to… [0:00] [[14:05] crosstalk] [0:00] [0:00] …

Josh:  [14:05] but, yeah. [0:00] Jim: : [14:06] Yeah, we… [0:00] [[14:07] crosstalk] [0:00]

James:  [14:07] We take money, too. We take… [0:00]

Josh:  [14:07] Yeah. Oh, oh, OK. Yeah, I like that. So we, we looked at trying to do something with OQ at one point. And, and because there’s so many different agencies out there and, and some companies have some specific requirements, we never really got around to doing it, never really found a sponsor. So, but you’re… [0:00]

James:  [14:28] I know… [0:00] [0:00] …

Josh:  [14:29] in front of all of your viewers. Maybe you can get involved… [0:00]

James:  [14:30] I’m your guy. [0:00] [0:00] …

Josh:  [14:32] do something like that. And, and, you know, that, that could be a good draw, right? Because these guys have the general certificate, exactly, right? But, but they could come in and maybe they could get some operator qualification, take that to the next level. And that, that brings people. [0:00] [14:46] And now the other thing, oh, geez, I should probably know this. But this course is cheap, I mean, super, super cheap. I think, I think our registration is like 150 bucks. [0:00] Jim: [14:55] Wait a minute. Wait a minute. [0:00]

Josh:  [14:56] So it… [0:00] Jim: [14:57] Wait a minute. [0:00] [0:00] …

Josh:  [14:58] it costs nothing to come here. [0:00] Jim: [14:57] For the Short Course, you’re saying the… [0:00]

James:  [14:59] Wow. [0:00] [0:00] …Jim: [14:59] registration’s about 150 bucks? [0:00]

Josh:  [15:01] Yeah, mm‑hmm. [0:00] Jim: [15:02] Yeah? And let’s, let’s, we’ll probably get some links or whatever built into it. But… [0:00]

Josh:  [15:07] Yeah. [0:00] Jim: [15:08] …where do they go? I assume online? They’re going to, they’re going to register online? Where would they go, real briefly? [0:00]

Josh:  [15:13] Yeah, go, definitely go on the line. And, and you can find it. [laughs] [0:00]

James:  [15:18] I’m going to Google… [0:00]

Josh:  [15:19] Corrosionshortcourse.com. [0:00] Jim: [15:22] Corrosionshortcourse.com. [0:00]

Josh:  [15:25] Yep, one word. [0:00] Jim: [15:27] I like it. [0:00]

Josh:  [15:27] It’s so easy. [0:00] Jim: [15:28] OK. [0:00]

Josh:  [15:28] Really short, really, really short, yeah. [0:00] Jim: [15:31] Ooh, hence the Short Course, huh? [0:00] [[15:34] crosstalk] [0:00]

Josh:  [15:34] Oh, [laughs] I see what you did there. [0:00]

James:  [15:37] Oh, man. [0:00]

Josh:  [15:38] Maybe that’s the best… [0:00]

James:  [15:40] I mean, we’re pros. [0:00] [0:00] …

Josh:  [15:42] corrosion joke now. I don’t know. [0:00]

James:  [15:45] Oh. [0:00]

Josh:  [15:45] Maybe you… [0:00] [[15:46] crosstalk] [0:00]

James:  [15:41] You stole Josh’s moment. Josh, we’ve been doing something neat to kind of wrap up the shows. [0:00] Jim: [15:46] Yep. [0:00]

Josh:  [15:47] OK. [0:00]

James:  [15:47] And we want to do the same with you. Josh, you’ve got the floor, within reason. You have the floor to take us out. What’s, what’s one thing, one thing you want to share, one word, whatever about the Short Course at Purdue? It’s very… [0:00]

Josh:  [16:04] Hm, one word. [0:00] [0:00] …

James:  [16:04] on‑the‑spot, isn’t it? [0:00] Jim: [16:05] Yeah. [0:00]

Josh:  [16:06] One, just… [0:00] [[16:06] crosstalk] [0:00]

James:  [16:07] One word, one thought? What, what do you want to leave our audience with? [0:00]

Josh:  [16:10] Networking. How about that? [0:00] Jim: : [16:13] Good. [0:00]

James:  [16:13] Awesome. [0:00]

Josh:  [16:13] That, that’s kind of corporate, too. I tell you what, the, the best part about this is the, the, the opportunity to meet people that have experiences. [0:00] [16:24] If you’ve got this, this problem or you’re just curious, I mean, there are so many people. And chances are, if you come up to me and ask me something, like, say, hey, I’ve got a question about internal blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, I’m gonna say I, I got no idea. Fol‑, come here. Follow me. I’m going to take you over here to Jane Brown. [0:00] Jim: [16:42] Yeah. [0:00]

Josh:  [16:42] Because she knows everything about that. And she’s going to answer that. And if she’s like, oh, you know, I dealt with that project one time that dealt with this thing on, with blah, blah, blah. Come here. I’ll take you over to him, and then we can all talk about it together… [0:00]

James:  [16:55] Yeah. [0:00] [0:00] …

Josh:  [16:55] which is, which is, that’s how this stuff happens. And it’s fantastic. And then you’ve got these three people, all contacts, you’ve met them. You can call them up in future years and say hey, I met you at the Short Course. [0:00] Jim: [17:06] Yep. [0:00]

Josh:  [17:06] I had a question… [0:00]

James:  [17:07] Can I, can I be on your podcast? [0:00] [0:00] …

Josh:  [17:09] about this or, or can you give me a recommendation for a job? Or, yeah, anything, you know? [0:00] [[17:14] crosstalk] [0:00]

James:  [17:15] Can I be on your podcast? [0:00]

Josh:  : [17:16] Yeah. [0:00]

James:  [17:16] Right. [0:00]

Josh:  [17:17] Can be, can, can, Josh, I saw how awesome you were on Coffee with Jim & James. [0:00] [0:00] [

James:  [17:22] laughs] Can you do stand‑up on my… [0:00]

Josh:  [17:26] Can, can, can you introduce me to those guys? Because I want to be on their show because I see what it did for your career. And now, now I want them to do the same for me, right? [0:00]

James:  : [17:34] Sure. It happens all the time around here. [0:00]

Josh:  [17:37] Yeah. [0:00]

James:  [17:37] Yeah. You’ll book your next stand‑up here. [0:00]

Josh:  [17:39] You’re kingmakers, right? [0:00]
